Always follows a young bear through a number of life milestones into adulthood, with a blue butterfly guiding and quietly championing them along the way.
The butterfly symbolises the presence of someone no longer with us, bringing an uplifting sense of strength, almost like an unseen superhero that is always beside them.
Written in gentle rhyme and brought to life through bright, vivid illustration, the book is designed to be simple, engaging and accessible for young readers. Each page offers small moments of interaction, inviting children to spot the butterfly, and a robin, as the story unfolds.
It is designed to offer an empowering way for families to navigate loss, while remaining an engaging and accessible story for any child.
About the Author
Always was written and illustrated by Marie Donnellan in memory of her late daughter Catherine.
The book was created for her children, Rose and JJ, to help keep their sister’s memory present in their lives and to give them a sense of the great strength they carry with them as they grow.
Produced as a charity project, all proceeds from Always are donated to HopeSpace, supporting children and families navigating loss.
While inspired by sibling loss, the story is intended to resonate widely, offering a simple, empowering way for families navigate the loss of someone in their life.

HopeSpace is an Irish charity that supports children, young people and families living with grief, loss and bereavement. Losing someone you love can be life-changing, and for a child, it can be confusing, frightening and deeply isolating. In the days and months that follow a loss, families often don’t know where to turn or how to find the right words.
Through compassionate specialist support, HopeSpace provides children with a safe space to express what they are feeling, helping them understand that grief is normal, that love remains, and that they are not alone. HopeSpace also supports parents and guardians, offering guidance on how to speak to children about loss and navigate bereavement as a family.
